I’m Amanda Garcia Hess and I am a trauma-informed, BIPOC, sex and relationship therapist working under the direct supervision of Emily Gordon MSW, MEd, LCSW, CST.
I believe our health and wellness is inextricably tied to our sexuality—with ourselves and in relationship. I help individuals and couples who want to strengthen intimacy, navigate through life’s many transitions, and improve sexual satisfaction throughout it all. My work is collaborative, compassionate, and practical. I embrace a strengths-based approach guided by empathic curiosity and cultural humility. I strive to meet clients exactly where they are at, while naturally gravitating towards laughter and hope during our sessions.
Amanda’s Approach to Relationship and Sex Therapy
Amanda is passionate about supporting clients through challenges related to sex and connection; particularly when sexual trauma, infertility, perinatal and postpartum changes, or the transition to parenthood are present. She is committed to supporting women through peri-menopause, not only as a time of physical change, but also as an opportunity for self-reflection, empowerment, and sexual liberation.
Amanda’s approach is collaborative and compassionate, rooted in attachment-based and client-centered principles. She incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotionally focused therapy, somatic awareness, and mindfulness to support clients in developing deeper self-understanding, building stronger connections, and creating lasting, intentional changes in their lives.
Academic Academic Background + Professional affiliations
Amanda received her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy degree from Northwestern University, a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Sociology, and a minor in Psychology from Texas State University. She’s an active member of the following associations:
American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
Illinois Affiliation of Marriage and Family Therapists (IAMFT)
AMANDA’S Professional Journey
Amanda’s identities as a cishet, mother, partner, wife, Latina, and LGBTQIA+ accomplice have shaped her work with the nuanced experiences and voices that are often overlooked in conversations about sexuality and wellness.
Prior to pursuing work in therapy, she spent 15+ years in fast-paced, business environments. As a career changer, she understands the pressures that high-achieving people face and the ways those demands can affect relationships and sexuality, particularly in male-dominated industries. These insights are layered into her work with clients who are balancing careers, family life, and the pursuit of personal and sexual fulfillment.
